CHRISTIAN
BROTHERS HIGH SCHOOL
COMPUTERS AND INTERNET: ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE
Use of computers and the Internet facilitates
research, makes available unique resources, enables students to explore
the riches of thousands of libraries and databases, provides the means
for interacting with others beyond the school community, and encourages
communication, collaboration and greater participation in the global
community.
RESPONSIBILITY
CBHS provides Internet access in all
classrooms and labs in order to enhance the educational process. The
smooth operation and continued use of this resource requires that the
Internet connection be used ethically, legally, and efficiently. It is
Christian Brothers High School’s intent to set reasonable requirements
for acceptable and responsible use. Any user who violates these
guidelines may be denied further access through the school connection.
Students and parents/guardians are primarily
responsible for the appropriate and ethical use of technology,
especially in the home. However, CBHS reserves the right to impose
consequences for inappropriate use that takes place off campus and
outside school hours. Inappropriate use includes harassment, use of
school name, remarks directed to or about teachers, offensive
communications and safety threats.
SECURITY
Along with the wealth of information resources
comes the availability of material that may not be of educational value
in the school setting, and material which can be morally objectionable.
We firmly believe that the richness of education information and global
interaction far outweigh the dangers.
Student Internet use in the school will be a supervised activity.
Vandalism of any kind may result in cancellation of privileges.
Vandalism is defined here as any deliberate attempt to harm or destroy
hardware, software, or to disrupt services, whether by physical means or
by the uploading or creation of computer viruses.
To assure that viruses are not introduced into the system, downloading
files of any type without the expressed permission of the supervising
teacher or lab instructor is prohibited.
ACCEPTABLE USE
Use of CBHS computer resources is intended for
academic purposes only.
Users must be respectful of others in all
communications. Use of inappropriate language (vulgarities, profanities,
obscenities, harassment, racial slurs, etc.) will not be tolerated, nor
will any communication that may bring disgrace to CBHS.
All users are expected to abide by Tennessee
State and U.S. laws and regulations. Transmission of any material in
violation of these laws and regulations is PROHIBITED. This includes,
but is not limited to:
·
access and /or transmission of obscene, pornographic, or
sexually explicit material
·
accessing material that advocates violence or
discrimination (hate literature)
·
activities that are disruptive to the network service
·
unauthorized attempts to enter restricted areas of
information
·
the sending of threatening, defamatory or fraudulent
messages
·
use for commercial activities
·
deliberate violation of copyright, or other use of another
person’s intellectual property without his prior written approval and/or
giving proper acknowledgement.
Users must not reveal personal data such as
address, phone number, or the personal data of other users.
Users must not reveal their CBHS network
passwords to other users.
Personal E-Mail, Instant Messaging, and on-line
Chats are generally prohibited. However, students wishing to use e-mail
for a specific school project may be allowed to do so under supervision
of the classroom teacher or lab instructor.
PRIVACY
While our filtering systems establish some
parameters for appropriate use within our buildings, students are
primarily responsible for their online behavior. Users should NOT expect
that files stored on school computers will be private. Files stored on
school computers may be treated like school lockers and be examined at
any time.
NON-LIABILITY
Christian Brothers High School makes no
warranties of any kind, whether expressed or implied, for the service it
provides, and will not be held responsible for any loss of data
resulting from delays and service interruptions. Christian Brothers
High School makes no guarantee that the system will be error free and is
