THE
STUDENT ATHLETE
NCAA
Academic Eligibility for the College Athlete The National Collegiate Athletic Association governs
over 900 schools in three divisions and sponsors championships in over 20 sports.
High school athletes who are being recruited by Division I or Division II
colleges must meet the academic eligibility criteria of the NCAA.
During senior year of high school the athlete must request that his high
school transcript be sent to the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse for
evaluation. The Clearinghouse
will provide this information to colleges requesting the student's
eligibility status. Upon completion
of high school the athlete must meet the criteria outlined below to meet NCAA
standards. Information about eligibility, drug testing, services for students with disabilities, and other aspects of the NCAA program can be found at www.ncaa.org. Online
Registration:
The NCAA encourages seniors to register with the Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse
via the Internet.
Registration by Mail: To register by mail, seniors should see their counselor for assistance. See this NCAA link for more information: https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common/
Some
Statistics
from the NCAA "There are nearly one
million high school football players and about 500,000 basketball players.
Of that number, about 150 make it to the NFL and about 50 make an NBA
team." "Less than 3 percent of
college seniors will play one year in professional basketball." "The odds of a high school
football player making it to the pros at all -- let alone having a career -- are
about 6,000 to 1; the odds for a high school basketball player -- 10,000 to
1." The message? Instead
of focusing on which college can lead to a career in the pros, focus on which
college can provide the best education. TSSAA Academic Eligibility Requirements The member high schools of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association have adopted minimum eligibility requirements for participation in high school sports. As a member of the TSSAA, Christian Brothers High School adheres to that organization’s rules and regulations, The regulations require that a student must earn a minimum of six high school credits for the preceding school year if 24 or more credits are required for graduation if he wishes to participate in TSSAA sanctioned sports. All credits must be earned by the first day of the beginning of the school year. Summer school credits may be counted toward the total of the five required credits if those credits will count toward graduation. However, a student may not repeat a course he has already passed and expect it to count. Students who are ineligible first semester may gain eligibility second semester by passing a specified number of courses during the first semester. 9th graders must have been academically promoted from 8th grade to be eligible for high school sports.
