Our School

DE LA SALLE ELEMENTARY is a Catholic, coeducational elementary school administered by the Christian Brothers. Nestled in the neighborhood near Poplar and Hollywood Streets, Blessed Sacrament Parish has been an anchor for the people of that area for nearly a century. For most of those years, an elementary school attached to the parish was in operation, until economic factors forced its closing. The school was re-opened August 18, 2000 as one of the “Jubilee Schools” of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis and served families with kindergarten-aged children. De La Salle has added one grade to the lower school each year since its reopening.  The Middle  School will open in August of 2002.

OUR MISSION

The PHILOSOPHY of De La Salle School reflects the ideals of the Jubilee Schools: ALL FAMILIES in the community, regardless of race, religion, cultural background, or ability to pay, deserve the highest quality academic and moral education for their children. We strive to teach our children to know the love of Jesus Christ, and to be bearers of that love to all whom they will meet.

OUR MISSION, as a Catholic Jubilee School in the tradition of the Christian Brothers, we strive to provide a strong scholastic, religious, and practical education in a caring, nurturing, and loving environment that will liberate and empower students spiritually, academically, socially, physically and emotionally.

WE BELIEVE IN...

  1. Christ [as] the reason for this school.  He is the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes.  He is the model of its faculty and the inspiration of its students.”

  2. Lasallian Education and its core values of faith, service, and community.

  3. the “Ten Commitments of Lasallian Schools”  as paraphrased here:

    1. Teaching as a call from God which must be accepted and nurtured

    2. Teachers as models for their students and for each other

    3. Faith, Religion, and Spirituality fully integrated into the entire school day

    4. Fortitude and Creativity – constant evaluation and constant improvement in order to meet every student’s needs

    5. Comprehensive (whole person) and Practical Education (what student needs in order to be successful in life)

    6. Caring Educational Community – parent, teachers, administrators, students, associated schools, and volunteers all making a valued contribution.

    7. Celebrating and building upon diversity of race, ability, religion, cultural, economic and social background in our school.

  4. Affordable education that provides an option to parents.

  5. Personalized Education that values and takes into account cultural, psychological, familial, emotional, spiritual, and educational differences (building on multiple intelligences).

  6. Ongoing assessment of students, documented by teachers, and communicated to both students and parents.

  7. The importance of communicating our successes with the larger community.

  8. High academic expectations, discipline, a safe school environment, strong fundamental education: religion, technology, reading, writing, and arithmetic.

  9. Graduates of strong moral character whose responsible commitment to religion, community, family, and those in need guides their lives.

  10. Becoming a religious and educational center for the community – educating children through adults.

OUR CURRICULUM

Teaching at De La Salle Elementary is fun, exciting, and effective because we employ active, “hands on” techniques to fully involve the students in the learning.  Our language arts program includes both Phonics and Whole Language instruction, as well as, Reading, using The Accelerated Reader Program. Math, Religion, Spanish, PE, Music, and Art round out the curriculum.  Computers enhance the curriculum by allowing the teacher use diagnostic testing to create and manage individualized programs for each student.  Teachers and students have access to computers and the Internet in the classroom.
