Because of the ongoing construction, the increased number of students, and the growing number of students driving, there is a limited amount of parking on the CBHS campus. Thus, we ask for everyone's patience, attentiveness, and awareness when maneuvering around the parking lots.

Chris Fay

I want to congratulate our graduating class of 2017. These young men have made an impact on the life of our school and have demonstrated great determination and leadership this year. They have worked hard for four years and certainly earned their CBHS diploma. As they leave the safe confines of 5900 Walnut Grove Road, it is our prayer that they will discern their vocation and life’s work with purpose. As we wish them well, I recall the Gospel of John in which Jesus tells his disciples, “Do not work for food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life.” (John 6:22-29)

The month of May begins with the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker, who was the foster-father of Jesus. St. Joseph quietly served as Jesus’ earthly father as he worked as a carpenter. His strong faith in God’s plan and humble servitude is a model for all of us. He certainly worked for the food of eternal life as he remained focused on Jesus’ purpose in life.

St. Joseph and our Blessed Mother, Mary should give us peace as we watch the Class of 2017 graduate and begin to make their paths in life. We are confident that, in cooperation with their parents and families, we have provided them a solid foundation that is necessary to make wise and faithful choices. Let us pray that our Brothers’ Boys will “work for the food that endures for eternal life” and remain Men for Tomorrow and Brothers for Life.

God Bless,

Chris Fay

It's hard to believe it's already May! AP exams are already in full swing, senior exams are just around the corner, and the underclassmen are hard at work trying to convince themselves that their exams are light years away. Here are a few (more than a few!) items to keep on your academic calendar for the month of May:

• Saturday, May 6 – SAT at CBHS

• Sunday, May 7 – Baccalaureate Mass at CBHS
• Tuesday, May 9 – Graduation practice in Heffernan Hall
• Tuesday, May 9 – Senior exams, periods 5,6,7,8
• Wednesday, May 10 – Senior exams, periods 1,2,3,4
• Saturday, May 13 – Graduation at Hope Church
• Tuesday, May 16 – Br. Stephen J. O’Malley junior class awards
• Wednesday, May 17 – Br. Stephen J. O’Malley sophomore and freshman class awards
• Monday, May 22 – Thursday, May 25 – Semester exams for underclassmen. Please note the order of exams in the Spring.

From Dr. Jeff Blancett, Director of Counseling Services

As this year comes to a close, there is still a lot of work left to do. With just a few weeks remaining, please encourage your son to keep his shoulder to the grind stone. We still have few weeks of school left as well as the semester exams.

The Semester exam schedule will be as follows:

May 22 – 7th and 8th Period exams
May 23 – 5th and 6th Period exams
May 24 – 3rd and 4th Period exams
May 25 – 1st and 2nd Period exams

The first exam of each day will begin at 8:00 am. The second exam period of the day will begin at 9:20 am. Please take note that the order of exams this semester will be in reverse order.

The last ACT testing of this academic year will be on June 10th. The last day for regular registration to avoid late fees is May 5th. Late registration is available May 6 – 13. The last SAT testing date this year will be June 3rd. You can register for the SAT until May 9th. Late registration for mailed applicants is May 16th. May 24th is the last date to register by phone or online. Please remember that CBHS is NOT a test site for either the ACT or SAT in the Month of June. The next SAT testing offered at CBHS will be August 26th and the next ACT testing offered at CBHS will be September 9th. If your son has some down time over the summer, it would be beneficial for him to do some ACT/SAT prep work if he will be taking the test when we return to school in August.

Seniors will graduate Saturday, May 13 at Hope Presbyterian Church at 9:30 am. This marks a milestone in each student’s educational career. Congratulations to our graduates and to their families on a job well done. We wish them all success as they move on to the next chapter in their lives.

We are in the final steps of completing the master schedule for next year. I am sure that before the students leave for the summer break they will have their schedules in hand. If your son is taking an honors level class or an AP class, be sure he checks the CBHS web page to make sure he is aware of any work that he must complete over the break.

Credit Recovery will begin June 5th for students needing to earn credit for any required classes they did not pass during the school year. The dates for credit recovery are June 5 – June 30. Parents of students who will be required to attend credit recovery will be notified beginning May 26th by the administration.

Many of you have asked how Mrs. Jones is doing. I am happy to report that she continues to show much improvement with the treatment regimen her doctors have prescribed. I am confident that prayers so many of you have offered up in her name have been answered. Please continue to pray for her speedy recovery.

Have a nice summer,

The CBHS Counselors

Words from St. John Baptist de la Salle

“You can do more with the grace of God than you think.”

The Brothers’ Way

The young boys who enter CBHS are challenged to grow into young men of faith and character. Throughout their experience as a Brothers’ Boy, they will learn about the Brothers’ Way—a set of virtues that each Brothers’ Boy should embody in his life. Each month throughout the school year, teachers and students will focus on a different virtue in order to expand their understanding of themselves and the world around them. These virtues each connect to one of the 5 Lasallian Core Principles.

During the months of April and May, we focus specifically on the Lasallian Core Principle—Quality Education. The purpose of CBHS is to educate students and encourage them to become life-long learners constantly striving to improve themselves. During May, the Brothers’ Way virtue is determination. Students will spend time discussing the importance of determination or “grit” as we finish up this school year. As a part of their discussion, students will take a “Grit Test.” Follow this link to take your own “grit test” and see how you rank. Take some time this month to discuss why grit or determination is a significant trait for success.

Prayer for Determination

Father Almighty, give me a sense of nearness to thee when I may be faltering from weariness in well doing. May I hold to my determinations and be focused to my plans.
Help me to discern good from bad, right from wrong.
May I know and see what is useful.
May I be focused to the right direction and strategy.
Let me not give unnecessary energy to what is worthless.
Guide me Lord to know what is worthwhile, that I may acquire strength through the power of truth.
Give me strength and determination to stand firm in my endeavors.
Give me the courage Lord to move on.
Light and clear my path and walk along with me on my journey of life even when I grow weary or become tired.
Grant that I may have the strength to complete my duties to the best of my abilities to glorify You. Amen.

Thursday Morning Masses

We will continue offering Mass every Thursday morning at 7:20 am in the Brothers’ chapel. Each week the Mass will be offered for the intentions of a different organization or team on campus, but all are welcome to attend.

Thursday, May 4, Mass will be said for the intentions of the track team.
Thursday, May 11, Mass will be said for the intentions of the soccer teams.
Thursday, May 18, Mass will be said for the intentions of the Brothers Around the Wordl.

St. John Baptist de La Salle. Pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts. Forever.

From Mike Kelly, Director of Athletics

May concludes the 2017 school year and the school athletic seasons. It is a hectic time with exams, graduation, post-season uncertainty, and closure on many levels. The TSSAA hosts a Spring Fling in Murfreesboro, TN on May 22-26. Soccer, Tennis, Baseball, and Track will hopefully be competing! Our four other Spring sports compete at differing times throughout the crazy month.

We have been very fortunate to have had another great year of Athletics at Christian Brothers. Our coaches and athletes have worked extremely hard competing at the games they love! Lifelong lessons and permanent relationships were formed along the way. Our student body earned the mythical title of “Best Student Section in the Country.” Our students are invested in Athletics and each one plays a part – whether in a uniform, in a support role within the program, or cheering wildly from the stands! Athletics are an important part of the CBHS Community!

A few key dates:
May 5-6 - Water Polo State, Knoxville, TN
May 6 - Lacrosse Playoffs, 1pm, Tom Nix Stadium
May 6 - Rugby Semi-State, USA Stadium
May 22-26 - TSSAA Spring Fling, Murfreesboro, TN
June 3 - Trap Team Regionals, Memphis

**Tennis, Baseball, and Soccer will have State playoffs the weeks of May 8 and May 15. We will be competing with schools from Middle and East TN. Dates and times have NOT been set since we need to coordinate with each school regarding Graduations, Baccalaureates, Exams, and Senior events. Please check our website and Daily Bulletin for updates.

Clash III and House Cup Overall Winners:
Clash III was a tight race. There was a lot of activity late in the Clash, with the Wii Video Game Tournament, Brothers’ Spring Sports Fest, and the Theater Production “Of Mice & Men”. Abban House came out on top over 2nd place Flavian and earned first in line at lunch during the week of April 24-28. Congratulations to Abban House! Please see the full results below.

The House Cup was calculated a little differently than just adding up all the points from the entire year. The categories of Social, Brotherhood, Mission, Spirit and Advisory were tallied and then each weighted 20% each. The overall winner had the best combined performance in all categories. Flavian House won the overall competition and attended the Day at the Redbirds on Monday, May 1. Congratulations to Flavian House! Bernardine House will get first line lunch all week for coming in 2nd place.

Brothers of Faith and Walnut Groove Spring Concerts (April 30th):

The Brothers of Faith and Walnut Groove held their spring concerts at St. Louis Church due to a power outage at CBHS. The Brothers of Faith performed in the church and the Walnut Groove performed in the Clunan Center. Both performances were outstanding!
