Students who miss either the December or the May service deadline will receive a U and will be assigned summer school at the conclusion of the current school year. They also will be expected to finish their service requirement by the end of the summer school session. At the successful completion of the summer school session, including completion of the remaining service hours, the U grade will be changed to the academic grade earned during the regular school year. If they do not attend the summer session or complete their service requirement, the semester grade will change to an F. There will be no exemptions from the fall and spring deadlines. Exceptions for extraordinary situations will be handled by the Religion or Ethics teacher on a case by case basis. Students have an entire year to complete either 16 or 24 service hours, and will be expected to do so without exception and on time.
The first week of school, teachers will distribute a service contract to each student. Students and parents are asked to complete the contract and return it to the student’s Religion or Ethics teacher by August 21. While the list of activities will in many cases be tentative, it should reflect that the student has investigated service possibilities and begun to plan for completing his hours on time. If there are questions, please e-mail the student’s Religion or Ethics teacher.
Another important reminder: If you have questions about what qualifies as a service hour, contact the student's Religion or Ethics teacher. Service organizations and activities not listed on this site or not announced in the daily bulletin must be pre-approved by the teacher, who is the ultimate decision-maker regarding service hours. No one other than the teacher or Religion and Ethics Department Chair has the authority to approve service hours. So when in doubt, ask the teacher ahead of time!
