Christian Brothers High School Minimize

Brothers Community 1887CBHS was founded in Memphis in 1871 by the Christian Brothers, a Roman Catholic religious teaching congregation originated in 1681 in France by St. John Baptist de La Salle.  The Brothers operated a high school as well as a college at 612 Adams until 1940 when the school moved to Central and East Parkway, the present site of Christian Brothers University. Because of a steady increase in enrollment, the high school facilities were moved to the present location in East Memphis in 1965.

The CBHS student population is comprised of young men from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds. Students come from urban as well as suburban sections of Memphis.  Some commute from the adjacent areas of east Arkansas and north Mississippi. While 55 percent of the student body is Roman Catholic, CBHS welcomes students of all creeds.  The student-teacher ratio is 12 to 1.

Grades and Rankings Minimize

CBHS utilizes a letter system of grades ranging from A to F with honors and Advanced Placement courses weighted one and two quality points, respectively.  For the purposes of computing grade point averages, quality points are assigned to letter grades as follows:

Grade Range Regular Courses Honors Courses AP Courses
A+ 98-100% 4.3 5.3 6.3
A 93-97% 4.0 5.0 6.0
A- 90-92% 3.7 4.7 5.7
B+ 87-89% 3.3 4.3 5.3
B 83-86% 3.0 4.0 5.0
B- 80-82% 2.7 3.7 4.7
C+ 77-79% 2.3 3.3 4.3
C 73-76% 2.0 3.0 4.0
C- 70-72% 1.7 2.7 3.7
D+ 68-69% 1.3 2.3 3.3
D 65-67% 1.0 2.0 3.0
F <65% 0.0 0.0 0.0

Rank in class is determined by the weighted average and is reported in deciles rather than an exact rank. (U = No Credit: A "U" grade designates that a student has not completed work required for the course even though he may have a passing average.)

Academic Program Minimize
Our academic program is college preparatory, although multiple level courses are designed to provide flexibility for individual differences and abilities for students in grades 9-12.  Christian Brothers High School provides a challenging academic program as well as a strong spiritual environment. This dual purpose not only prepares young men for college and careers but also emphasizes knowledge of self, service to the community and an understanding and appreciation of the values embodied in the traditions of Lasallian schools throughout the world.
