Long-time CBHS counselor and faculty member Valerie Jones passes away

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Valerie Jones, who passed away on Thursday, September 21. She served as Director of College Counseling and faculty member for Christian Brothers High School from 1990 until her retirement this past summer. The funeral has been planned for Tuesday, September 26 at 1:00 pm at the Church of the Holy Communion, 4645 Walnut Grove Road in Memphis. CBHS will host a reception at the school following the funeral.

Germantown, TN

Valerie Thorn Jones, 66, died Thursday, September 21, 2017 at her home in Germantown, TN. Valerie was born at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN on August 18, 1951 to Doss Eugene "Gene" Thorn and Earnestine Whitaker Thorn. She grew up in Memphis with her younger sister, Velma, and attended Hutchison School. Valerie graduated from Rhodes College and later earned a master's degree in counseling from the University of Memphis. She married her first husband, Richard Jones, Jr., in 1972 and was the loving mother to their three children - Marion, Richard III, and Thorn. Valerie married her second husband, Jeff Martin on August 19, 2017. 

Valerie began a lifelong career in education teaching middle schoolers at Innsworth School in Nashville, TN. She was the Director of College Counseling and the AP Psychology instructor at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis prior to her retirement in June 2017, having been a member of the CBHS faculty for twenty-seven years. Valerie was a beloved fixture in the CBHS community, and was widely esteemed for the genuine interest she took in the lives of her students and their personal well-being, which often extended to their families and friends over the years. She was a kind and generous person of high character, and was well-known for her fair and patient dealings with others. Valerie was also known for her piano playing and the gourmet desserts she often prepared for family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who came to know her, especially family, friends and the CBHS community. Valerie is survived by her husband, Jeff Hampton Martin of Germantown, TN; her three children, Marion Thorn Jones (Sambade) of New York City, NY; Richard Franklin Jones III and Eugene Thorn Jones, both of Baton Rouge, LA. She is also survived by her two stepchildren, Hallie Martin (Stoltz) of Slidell, LA; and Jeff Hampton Martin Jr. of Hattiesburg, MS; and her three step-grandchildren, Alan Joseph Stoltz; Connor David Stoltz; and Ethan Hampton Stoltz, all of Slidell, LA. 

A memorial service will be held at Church of The Holy Communion in Memphis on Tuesday, September 26, at 1 p.m. A reception will follow at Christian Brothers High School. Private graveside services will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be sent to Church of The Holy Communion. The family also requests that any contributions be made to Christian Brothers High School, Church of The Holy Communion, or The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society.
