Class of 2017 - Valedictorian Riggs Markham, Salutatorian Sam Banks

Christian Brothers High School wishes to congratulate  Valedictorian Riggs Markham and Salutatorian Sam Banks, who have achieved the top grade point averages of the 217 members of the CBHS Class of 2017. The 146th commencement of CBHS will be held on Saturday, May 13 at Hope Church.

Riggs Edgar Markham was born in Memphis on April 7, 1999 to Stephanie Shelley Riggs and John Edgar Markham. His mother is from Memphis (she went to St. Mary’s), and his father is from Northern California. He grew up in Central Gardens, where he attended Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School (GSL) from Pre-K through 8th grade.

Riggs, a Nation Merit Finalist, will be attending Christian Brothers University next year studying computer engineering. He was also accepted to NYU, Georgia Tech, Washington University, Vanderbilt, and Rhodes. In terms of AP classes, Riggs has taken World History, European History, US History, Chemistry, Calculus AB, and the AP Language and Composition exam, receiving  5’s on all of them. He is currently taking AP English Literature, AP Latin, and AP Calculus BC. A STEMM student, Riggs also achieved a perfect score of 36 on the ACT.

Riggs is an active member of the sports and club activities at CBHS. He is a four-year member of the CBHS Latin Club, elected Parliamentarian as a sophomore.  He is also an active participant in the CBHS Science Club, Model United Nations, Knowledge Bowl Team and Tabletop Gaming Club.  A perfect mix of mathematics and service occurred last year when Riggs volunteer as statistician for the CBHS Rugby Team.

usy as he is with clubs and academics, Riggs volunteers for organizations for which he is passionate. Though he volunteers for several worthy organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, he focuses the majority of his time at the Grace St. Luke’s Soup Kitchen on Sunday mornings.


Samuel Alva Banks III 
is a four-year member of the CBHS De La Salle Scholars program. He attended middle school at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School in Cordova, and is the son of Barbara and Sam Banks of Germantown, TN.

Since freshman year, Sam has challenged himself enrolling in the most rigorous classes offered, including 9 Advanced Placement, 2 Dual Enrollment and 8 honors courses. Sam earned the qualification as an AP Scholar with Distinction and National Merit Commended Scholar.  He scored a 34 on the ACT, with a 35 super-score 

He is the recipient of many awards including 1st Honor Roll freshman through senior year as well as gold and silver medals for the National Latin Exam.  He is a four-year member of the CBHS Latin Club, and was elected class representative to the Brothers Leadership Council as a sophomore and junior.  Sam served as a CBHS Student Ambassador sophomore through senior year and is an officer in the Key Club. Sam is the Vice President of the National Honor Society and a four-year member of the CBHS Soccer team.

 

Throughout his high school career, Sam has volunteered his time in the community with several organizations, including St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen, Grace St. Luke Soup Kitchen and Top Soccer. Upon graduation, Sam will be pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering or math at the University of Georgia.
